The Nutcracker Ballet has come to life each year at Stephens Auditorium in Ames since 1981! Produced by the Iowa State Center, Robert and Miyoko have served as the artistic directors since its inception. The ballet tells the story of Clara, her heroic Nutcracker prince, and the fantastic dream they share one Christmas Eve night. A cast of over 200 dancers, ages six through adult, come together from all over Central Iowa to rehearse for an hour one day each of ten weekends to present the ballet in mid-December. Professional dancers round out the cast in the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Unique to Iowa State Center’s Nutcracker Ballet are several dances not seen in other productions. Irish, American, Harlequins, Puppets and Hungarians to name a few. This year will be the 40th Nutcracker Auditions will be August 22 @ Stephens Auditorium.
