The Nutcracker Ballet has come to life each year at Stephens Auditorium in Ames since 1981! Produced by the Iowa State Center, Robert and Miyoko have served as the artistic directors since its inception. The ballet tells the story of Clara, her heroic Nutcracker prince, and the fantastic dream they share one Christmas Eve night. A cast of over 200 dancers, ages six through adult, come together from all over Central Iowa to rehearse for two and a half months to present the ballet in mid-December with professional dancers in the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Unique to Iowa State Center’s Nutcracker Ballet are several dances not seen in other productions like Irish, American, Harlequins, Puppets and Hungarians. Auditions are traditionally held the weekend after Labor Day and rehearsals are held on weekends at the Robert Thomas Dancenter starting in late September. Watch for audition dates and times on the Robert Thomas Dancenter and Stephens Auditorium websites!
